The theme for the 12th Ancillary Merchandising Conference (AMC) was "Getting ahead in the Digital Age." Ancillary revenue and merchandising rescued the profitability of many airlines and travel retailers. Without the likes of baggage fees, margins of 10% and higher would not have been achieved. But, the airlines and travel companies that will get ahead in our new digital age will be the ones which invest both in generating more ancillary revenues and using those profits to deliver a better customer experience. From giving people more reasons to travel, to making the end-to-end journey an experience to remember, this is all made easier by our increasingly digital world. However, many in the travel industry are not well-placed to take advantage of what digital offers. The Ancillary Mechandising Conference helped participants to understand the opportunities in digital– from automated commerce to how to drive people to all of your products and services.

Some of the Hot Topics covered in the 2018 Ancillary Merchandising Conference included:
♦ How Car Hire, Travel Insurance & Hotels - the “big three” - are making a come back as a source of ancillary revenue.
♦ A-commerce – we’ve moved from e-commerce and m-commerce to Automated commerce. How can it add to the customer experience and optimise sales?
♦ Are you offering an end-to-end customer experience – to get people to engage with your brand, are you offering a experience that people can enjoy? Is the Super PNR the answer?
♦ Level 3 NDC – with many airlines shouting that they are level 3 NDC compliant, what is it and how does it impact their merchandising?
♦ Merchandising in the Travel Agency Channel - is NDC delivering or is it now all about direct connects?
♦ Sustainability & Transparency – great retailers tell a story and make sure their brands connect with their customers. Is the travel industry doing enough?
♦ Website Design & Optimisation – who is getting their website right for merchandising and ancillaries?
♦ Tech Transformation – digital has been around for years, but the travel industry is still very analogue. How can you get connected and understand the tech transformation that is underway and use it to deliver better ancillary revenues and merchandising?
♦ Predictive Analytics – Big Data and personalisation are already here. How can you best use them without it becoming too much or “big brother” is watching?
♦ Regulation & GDPR – like it or not, governments around the world are looking at the rules governing digital and moving to regulate. The EU's General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) will come in to force after the conference for all companies globally and it is just one set of a major shift in the regulatory environment. Are you prepared?
♦ Digital Integration – with many airline and travel systems still being “analogue,” how can you get digital and analogue systems to talk to each other and deliver for your customers?
♦ Getting the back-end logistics right – several airlines in 2017 suffered major computer outages. The back end logistics are not the sexiest of topics, but are key to delivering day in, day out, for customers. Who’s getting this right and what are the lessons to learn from them?
♦ Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple – great retailers and already ahead in the digital world – will they decide that 2018 is the year to come after a share of the travel market?
♦ Whisky Tasting - It's Scotland, so we had to enjoy Scotland's "Water of Life!"
